GIER Director Awarded Governor General’s Literary Award

By Virginia Capmourteres

GIER Director Madhur Anand, a professor at the School of Environmental Sciences and published poet, has won the 2020 Governor General’s Literary Award for non-fiction.

The Governor General’s Literary Awards are managed by the Canada Council for the Arts and recognize the best books in Canada, in both English and French, in seven categories: Fiction, Non-fiction, Poetry, Drama, Young People’s Literature – Text, Young People’s Literature – Illustrated Books, and Translation.

Dr. Anand received this award for This Red Line Goes Straight to Your Heart: A Memoir of Halves, an experimental memoir about the Partition, immigration and generational storytelling. This memoir weaves together the poetry of memory with the science of embodied trauma using the imagined voices of the past and the vital authority of the present.

You can read more about Dr. Anand’s book on this interview with the Quill & Quire magazine.
