Impacts of the coronavirus pandemic on biodiversity conservation

By Virginia Capmourteres

University of Guelph professor and GIER Affiliate Member, Dr. Robin Roth, co-authored a paper on the Journal Biological Conservation on how the coronavirus pandemic is impacting the world’s biodiversity and our ability to protect it.

In their article, the researchers discuss not only how the pandemic is affecting biodiversity, but also how this global crisis might take a toll on the training and careers of conservation researchers and practitioners. According to the authors, it is still too early to assess the overall impacts of the pandemic. However, they highlight that this is an opportunity to remind people of the links between healthy, resilient ecosystems and human well-being.
