Group members Swaroop (senior researcher), Alexander (PDF), Sam (PhD student) and Brendan (MSc student) attended this year’s CSC in Ottawa. It was a time for sharing our research, networking for new opportunities, and even re-uniting with past Tremaine group members! There was even a talk on the Raman spectroscopy of maple syrup…
This post looks at the conference itself and our group members’ experiences.

Canadian Chemistry Conference and Exhibition is the premier conference for the Canadian Society for Chemistry. The mission of the chemistry conference is to be your forum; a venue where you can embrace learning, exchange knowledge, build innovative ideas, advance your career, and advance the chemistry profession.

Brendan presented a poster titled Quantifying the Deuterium Isotope Effect for the Bicarbonate System in Light and Heavy Water:

“Conference highlights for me were networking with such a wide range of chemists outside our traditional physical/thermodynamic sphere and visiting the Canadian Museum of Nature to see their large collection of fossils.”
Sam presented a poster titled Thermochemical Constants for Aqueous Hydroxlyamines from Twin-Cell Scanning Nanocalorimetry and Densimetry. “My favourite parts were honestly hanging out with Brendan and Alexander out for dinner at a cool back alley pub (Heart and Crown – literally has a patio in the alley) and breakfast at SconeWitch.”

Alexander was also noted to have gone on many museum trips while in Ottawa, and came back with a dashing new brimmed hat. Meanwhile Sam caught up with Dr. Jane Ferguson, an alumnus of Tremaine Research Group. We still collaborate with Jane from time to time, benefitting from her technical knowledge of conductivity measurements.
