Canadian Nuclear Society (CNS) Conference 2025

A strong contingent represented Tremaine Research Group at the 44th annual CNS Conference in Toronto from Jun 8-11. Kelvin Olivares, Haven Camillo, Jason Yap, Sam Binkley, and Brendan Carson all attended.

Hosted by Ontario Power Generation (OPG), this conference brought together leaders from industry and academia to collaborate, share new information, and plan the future of nuclear power generation (and research) in Ontario and across Canada. As described by the conference organizers:

The recent call at COP28 for the tripling of worldwide nuclear capacity encourages the build-out of reactors both large and small, with ramification on fuel-efficient reactor design, on long-term fissile fuel availability, on recycling of used fuel, and on safe disposal of nuclear material, such as used fuel remnants or activated structural components.
While many of these aspects are examined in detail in the CNS specialty meetings, be it SMRs or fuel, chemistry or maintenance, etc., a more general meeting such as the CNS Annual Conference can and should bring these aspects together for a comprehensive understanding of the interrelationships.

Within this larger event was the 49th CNS/CNA Student Conference, which invited undergrad, M.Sc, and PhD students to submit 5-page papers for review by industry experts. Accommodations during the conference and a travel bursary were awarded to all students with a paper that was accepted. This made it easy for our group to attend and allowed our students to present their work. There was a poster session where all students with accepted papers presented their work in poster format, and the 5-page papers will be published in the conference Proceedings.

Kelvin, Haven, Jason, Sam, and Brendan all presented posters, although we didn’t get photos of everyone due to a gathering crowd.

Samantha Binkley – Thermochemical Constants for Aqueous Hydroxlyamines from Twin-Cell Scanning Nanocalorimetry and Densimetry (not pictured)

Brendan Carson – Quantifying the Deuterium Isotope Effect for the Bicarbonate System in Light and Heavy Water by Nanocalorimetry (not pictured)
