Tremaine group was well-represented at UNENE’s annual conference and workshop, which was held on Dec 9-11 in Toronto. The University Network of Excellence in Nuclear Engineering (UNENE) is an organization founded on the principle of collaboration and knowledge transfer between universities and the nuclear energy industry across Canada. They’re also a funding partner of the Tremaine research group at UoG. The annual Workshop is the organization’s premier event, bringing together industry stakeholders, professors, and students from across the country for a program of talks, posters, panel discussions, and networking.

In addition to attending the workshop, four group members presented their research in the student poster session:
- Kelvin Olivares (M.Sc. candidate) – Nickel Glycolate Complexes Under Hydrothermal Conditions by Raman Spectroscopy
- Heather Robertson (Co-op student) – Measuring Partial Molar Properties of DEHA
- Brendan Carson (M.Sc. Candidate) – Quantifying the Deuterium Isotope Effect for the Bicarbonate System in Light and Heavy Water by Nanocalorimetry
- Jason Yap (M.Sc. Candidate) – Measuring Enthalpies of Ionization of Amine Species via Isothermal Titration Calorimetry at 25°C
Several employers were making recruiting efforts right at the workshop, including Ontario Power Generation (OPG) and Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL). The latter was conducting pre-arranged job interviews right at the workshop site, with multiple Tremaine group members interviewing after submitting CVs beforehand. This goes to show how UNENE and the Annual Workshop are directly linking university and industry opportunities!
