Patterns of Nostos in Italian Canadian Narratives ~ edited by Gabriel Niccoli

Patterns of Nostos in Italian Canadian Narratives ~ edited by Gabriel Niccoli 27 Apr, 2021 19:04 PM

The articles in this volume study the manner in which patterns of nostos, of journeying and returning, in Italian Canadian narratives are both identified and deployed. The contributions span from diaspora and postcolonial studies to cultural sociology and anthropology, from literary criticism and semiotics to the history of immigration, from high ranking diplomacy to creative writing and documentary photography, and from comparative literature to translation.

Historian Adriana A. Davies’ book From Sojourners to Citizens: Alberta’s Italian History is a unique and comprehensive history that documents the presence of Italians in Alberta in every era of immigration from the 1880s to the present. Most of the Italian-Canadian immigration history to date has been focused on Ontario or Quebec because of the size of the Italian communities in these provinces.

The Ontario Heritage Trust recognizes that “The Archival Research of Italian-Canadian Immigration and Culture Project identifies and preserves the cultural heritage of Italian-Canadian immigration in Ontario, and shares these stories at conferences and through an online archive. The students’ work is supported by Brock University, University College (University of Toronto) and the University of Guelph.

Italian-Canadian Narratives Showcase is an initiative born in 2019 under the guidance and support of ICAP (Italian-Canadian Archives Project), a national network dedicated to securing the Italian-Canadian contribution to Canada’s evolving narrative, past and present. ICNS displays Italian heritage projects across Canada. The material presented here comes from public and private archives, university students’ work, local Italian-Canadian clubs and associations. The projects showcase the history and the role of Italian migrants in Canada from the late 19th century to the present.

The University of Guelph provides an Open Access repository for the Italian-Canadian Narratives Showcase project.
